Super King Size Bed Linen – How King-Sized is Your King Size Bed?

Getting super king size bed linen that actually matches your king size mattress can be trickier than it sounds. History has taught us that not all kings were created equal and, ironically, neither are king-sized beds.

A standard king-size is shorter and wider than a Californian one, and if your bed has European origins then it’s a whole new ball game, as dimensions differ completely. To make things even worse, there’s a difference between European king size beds, German and UK ones. And, of course, the guys from the Land Down Under did it their own way and came up with yet another set of measurements – the Australian Super King Size Sheets aren’t even close to any other standards. If you just got your king size bed and are shopping around for beddings, then this article is for you.

I won’t elaborate on European and Australian models, since you are unlikely to find such bed sheets in American stores.

Standard King Size Bed Sheets

Can you spell “standardized standards”? The standard size of such a mattress is of 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, but dimensions may slightly differ from one manufacturer to another. Just to be on the safe side, measure your bed before going to your corner store. Even if the label says it’s a “Standard king size”, you may find that it doesn’t fit your mattress perfectly – some sheets may be an inch too narrow or too short.

Californian King Size Bed Linen

The size of a Californian king size mattress is of (roughly) 72 by 84 inches – don’t ask me why, somebody must have thought Californians were taller than the other Americans. So if you have such a bed, make sure you look for the “California King” label, the Standard one won’t fit. Again, make sure the actual sizes match your bed, and do keep in mind that mattresses come in various depths – you will need wider linens if yours is thicker than average.

Naming Conventions

As if this whole naming procedure wasn’t already mind-boggling, each of the American variations of king size beds is known by more than one name. Standard ones are also called Eastern King Size Beds, and Californians may also be found as Western king beddings, and these are only some I know of. Oh, and don’t get me started on European models, it looks like every manufacturing country has its own measurements and names, but they all are somewhat close to the standard US king size standards. As I already said, do measure your mattress and see which beddings fit.

The best luck I, for one, have had so far with super king size bed linen was with online stores. Unlike brick and mortar venues, each and every Internet shop I’ve come across displays the exact measurements of the beddings they’re selling. This truly makes shopping a breeze because it rules out the guesswork – and asking for further information – straight off the bat. I know shopping at Walmart’s can relieve stress and what-not, but if you value your time like I do, you will want to get over the boring part of shopping as painlessly as possible.
